Servant Event: The Empty Bowls Project
This fall, Green Park Lutheran School, in St. Louis, MO will undertake a school-wide servant event as an example of Faith in Action. The Empty Bowls Project is a national grass-roots effort that utilizes art education to promote hunger awareness and establishes a financial means for food security. Empty Bowls strives to raise awareness about the issues of hunger and food security, and to help bring about an attitude that will not allow hunger to exist.
The idea is relatively simple: During September and October, all students, faculty and staff at Green Park created 300 food-safe ceramic soup bowls in conjunction with the art curriculum. These bowls will be sold at a fundraising luncheon on Thursday, November 12, 2009 for $10 each. Green Park families, friends, alumni and individuals from the community are invited to attend the Empty Bowls luncheon from 11-2 that day: guests will select a bowl and partake of a wonderful soup/bread/dessert meal sponsored by several local restaurants. Guests keep the bowl to remind them that there are always empty bowls in our world.
All proceeds from the luncheon will benefit Lift for Life Gym, a St. Louis based after school program that promotes positive and healthy lifestyle choices for low-income children and teens. The Gym also encourages health by providing nutritious evening meals 5 days per week to approximately 50 children and teenagers , who otherwise would eat junk food for dinner (or not have dinner at all). Green Park hopes to raise $3000 for the evening meal program for this organization.
Plan to join us for lunch on November 12. For more information or to volunteer to help, contact Ashlyn Cunningham at 314-849-0068 or at acunningham@maryville.edu. Be an example of Faith in Action!
