Different Gifts, Same Lord
Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them. Romans 12:6a
Orchestras are not made up of only saxophones. Basketball teams cannot be made up of five guys who all want the basketball all the time. In the Armed Forces, while there needs to be a commanding officers, there also are those who follow the orders. In Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians and his letter to the Romans, in chapters 12, he addresses how the church functions as a body. In both places, he celebrates a diversity of gifts that are put in place by God.
Like a conductor or coach, our Lord has assembled the talents together within our congregations. Congregations are like fingerprints, though. No two are alike. Pastors and church leaders serve congregations when all of the varied gifts are utilized for the sake of Christ’s kingdom. Catechesis of children and adult inquirers takes place. Church facilities are maintained. Church finances are in order. Members are visited and supported. Outreach to the community happens. Individual Christians bear witness to Christ in their daily lives. There are lots of things that happen in a congregation from one Sunday to the next Sunday as the parish activities take place and as the saints serve in their various vocations. Different gifts, but the same Lord is at work through them all.
While there are many challenges facing our congregations today, it is good for us to acknowledge and give thanks to God for all of the gifts He has provided through His saints. Then, put them to work. God has provided different gifts, let us use them! Now is not a time for the pastor to do everything or be expected to save the congregation. Jesus Christ alone is our Savior. Instead, may our congregations be vibrant and healthy assemblies of varied gifts among God’s holy people, all serving the same Lord. May God grant it for Jesus’ sake!
Prayer – Lord God Almighty, even as You bless Your servants with various and unique gifts of the Holy Spirit, continue to grant us the grace to use them always to Your honor and glory; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Fraternally in Christ,
President Lee Hagan
