To deny having a checkered past is to deceive ourselves. We all have moments of regret and wish we could change past decisions. The phrase “live and learn” reflects this reality. Sometimes, we look back on our actions with embarrassment or shame, which is the Law revealing our sins. However, dwelling on guilt is unhelpful. Saying, “I know God forgives me, but I can’t forgive myself,” is unhelpful. While some say past behavior predicts future actions, this isn’t always true for Christians. Through contrition, repentance, and forgiveness, believers can be freed from their past. Christ’s words, “You are forgiven! Go in peace,” offer liberation from guilt.
St. Paul, in 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV), proclaims, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” This means you can start anew, free from burdens, living in the grace of your Holy Baptism. Your sins are forgiven and removed as far as the east is from the west.
Psalm 103:10–12 (ESV) reassures us:
“He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.”
Jeremiah 31:31-34 (ESV) speaks of a new covenant where God’s law is written on hearts, and He forgives iniquity, remembering sin no more. Friends in Christ, your sins are forgiven, and your past is forgotten. If God has forgiven you, why hold onto guilt? Are you trying to be a martyr or seeking control? I urge you to believe God’s words: You are forgiven! You are God’s precious child no matter what! God extends grace to the broken and lifts the downtrodden.
Remember, forgiveness isn’t about you! You can’t forgive yourself. Go in His peace and forgiveness and live free! Peace in Jesus!
Prayer - Merciful Father, we thank You for the new covenant that You sealed in Christ’s blood. You remember our sins no more. Teach us to know You, to walk in Your forgiveness, and to share Your grace with others. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
