Al accepted his first Teaching assignment at Salem Lutheran School, Black Jack, Missouri. He started his career as a Teacher and then became Principal. His other duties included Organist, Choir Director, and Basketball Coach. They were blessed with three Children. During that time he was attending Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. When he completed his studies he was installed as a Pastor in 1977. He served at Salem for 50 years until his retirement.
After his first retirement, he went back to work at Lutheran Church Missouri Synod International Headquarters and developed an Outreach Mission called “The 72”. After his second retirement from Synod, Al served as visitation Pastor at Salem Lutheran and Immanuel St. Charles attending to the spiritual needs of Homebound Members until 2021 when he was 89 years old. He officiated the marriage of his children and grandchildren and baptized most of his great grandchildren. Al and Lois enjoyed traveling with family and friends in their RV and spending winters in Sanibel, Florida until he became ill.
