On Oct. 8, 2019, professor emeritus at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis Rev. Dr. Norman E. Nagel was called home to glory. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia University/University of Adelaide, his Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis in 1953, and his PhD from King’s College in 1962, as well as an honory Doctor of Dvinity degree from Concordia University Irvine in 2012.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Priscilla “Betsy” Nagel (nee Newman); three children, Richard (Norma) Nagel, Christopher (Mollie) Nagel and Matthew (Kristi) Nagel; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
President Hagan says, “Dr. Norman Nagel influenced generations of pastors in the Synod by teaching them to focus on Christ and His gifts located within the Church, namely Holy Baptism, Holy Absolution and Holy Communion. Our prayers are with his wife Betsy, their sons and the rest of their family. May those who mourn find comfort in Christ crucified and risen again from the grave!”
Born in China, Rev. Dr. Nagel served Luther-Tyndale Lutheran Church in London, England (1953-57), Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cambridge, England (1958-60), Preceptor, Westfield House, Cambridge, England (1960-68), University Preacher, Chapel of the Resurrection, Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, IN (1068-83). He was a professor at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, from 1983 to 2006, when he became emeritus.
Visitation and Funeral for Rev. Dr. Norman Nagel
Visitation is set for 3-6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, at Laclede Groves, 723 S. Laclede Station Road, St. Louis, MO 63119. Visitation also will be held from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the Chapel of St. Timothy and St. Titus at Concordia Seminary, 801 Seminary Place, St. Louis, MO 63112. A funeral will follow immediately afterward.
A Funeral Service of Thanksgiving and Praise will be held next Tuesday, October 15, at 11:00 am, at the Chapel of Saint Timothy and Saint Titus, Concordia Seminary, 801 Seminary Place, St. Louis, MO 63112, with visitation beginning at 10:00 am. Visitation will also be held the day before from 3-6 pm at Laclede Groves, 723 S. Laclede Station Road, St. Louis, MO 63119, in the multi-purpose room to the right of the chapel.
Students, faculty, and former students are invited to sing in a men’s choir for the funeral. Rehearsals will be held on Monday, 12:30 pm at the LCMS International Center Chapel, 1333 S. Kirkwood Rd., Kirkwood, MO 63122; and Tuesday, 9:00 am in the Concordia Seminary chapel balcony.
