Rev. Dr. Thomas “Tom” Baker

September 17, 1945 – October 10, 2024

 

Pastor Thomas “Tom” A. Baker was born in Windsor, Ontario on September 17, 1945, to Albert and Theresa Baker. After graduating from Concordia College in Fort Wayne, IN with a Bachelor of Arts (1967) Tom attended Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, and earned a Master of Divinity (1972), Master of Sacred Theology (1981), Doctor of Ministry (1995), and Master of Arts (1998).

Pastor Tom served the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod as a parish pastor, vacancy pastor, radio talk show host, writer, and publisher. Tom was devoted to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ with a passion for Scripture interpreting Scripture and the theological distinctions between Law and Gospel. Tom had a gift for using analogies to explain Scripture, making it easy for the layperson to understand. Tom’s wit and character are well known and will be remembered.

Tom’s servanthood includes 28 years as pastor of St. James Lutheran (University City), 27 years broadcasting Law and Gospel on KFUO, and 23 years serving with Concordia Mission Society.

Tom is survived by his wife, Louise Baker; two children, Luther (Carrie), Kathryn (Mark) Stoddard; four grandchildren, Austin, Ashley, Madison, Gavin; brother Dave (Margaret) Baker. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother James, and son Philip.

Services:  Visitation at Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory, 14960 Manchester at Holloway, Ballwin, MO 63011, on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.  Funeral Service at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 9733 Olive Blvd, Olivette, MO 63132, on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at 1:00 p.m.  Interment to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
