Wilfred G. Meyer
Feb. 23, 1941 – April 22, 2025
Wilfred (Wil) G Meyer, age 84, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away April 22, 2025, at Mercy Hospital.
Wil was born to Walter Meyer and Viola Wischmeier Feb. 3, 1941, in Lincoln, Mo. He was baptized Feb. 23, 1941, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Mo., and confirmed May 2, 1954, at the same church. He remained faithful to his vows throughout his life.
He was raised in Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1959. Wil was united in marriage to Diane Dirks July 2, 1972, in Hilbert, Wis. Wil and Diane shared 52 years of marriage before his passing. The couple were blessed with three children, Christian (Abby) of Tacoma, Wash., Nathan (Shelly) and Ryan of Springfield, Mo., and six grandchildren: Jordan Meyer, Regan Meyer, Erin Meyer, Grace Meyer, Ethan Meyer, and Leah Meyer; one great-grandson, Noah Meyer; and two beloved nieces, Marjorie (David) Lutz and Diane (Dennis) Brockman. Wil was preceded in death by his parents and his only brother, Larry Meyer.
After high school, Wil helped his father on the family farm for two years and then enrolled in St. Paul’s College in Concordia, Mo. Upon graduation he went to Concordia University Nebraska in Seward, Neb., for his bachelor’s and master’s degree, and became a Lutheran school teacher. He was employed as a principal and teacher in the Lutheran school system serving several congregations including Trinity Lutheran in Hilbert, Wis.; Zion Lutheran in Decatur, Ind.; St. Paul’s Lutheran in Sedalia, Mo.; and Immanuel Lutheran in Lockwood, Mo. Over the course of his 60-year ministry career, Wil served in other roles including Elderly Ministry, Lay Pastor, Bible Class teacher, and Catechism instructor. He loved teaching the Word to young people. When not working, his joy was reading Scripture and living his life as a Christian. He found his biggest joy in his grandchildren and family time together. He was able to enjoy Easter dinner with his family shortly before his sudden passing. When the whole family was together, he would always say how good it was to be together.
A Celebration of Life service was held at Faith Lutheran Church in Springfield, Mo., May 10. Interment followed at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in rural Lincoln, Mo.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requests that memorial donations be made in Wil’s memory to Faith Lutheran Church, 1517 E. Valley Water Mill Road, Springfield, MO 65803.
