O Give Thanks Unto the Lord!

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”

Psalm 136:1

While Thanksgiving Day is not a festival on the Church’s calendar, it is central to the Church’s life. Thanksgiving Day may not be celebrated across the border in Canada or among sister congregations across the globe, but it is part of our common lexicon as we acknowledge the gifts of God and fittingly respond. The Psalmist provides the common refrain “for his steadfast love endures forever” in Psalm 136 to remind us of all the things for which we give thanks to God.

Turkey and dressing; pumpkin pie and family—these are not requirements for our thanksgiving celebrations, but they are blessings for which we can give thanks to God. The God who made the heavens, spread the waters, and placed the great lights in the sky above is deserving of our eternal thanks for His enduring love for us. He daily and richly provides us with all that we need through His gifts for body and soul. What more is there for us to do than to thank and praise, serve and obey Him?

As you gather with family and loved ones, it is good to pause and give thanks to God. However, give thanks the next day also—for God’s love endures forever. Christians raise their voices in the unending chorus of thanksgiving to God for His gifts. This song will continue in heaven for all eternity. May God bless your family celebrations and instill in us all thankful hearts for enduring love.

Prayer – Almighty God, Your mercies are new every morning and You graciously provide for all our needs of body and soul. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may acknowledge Your goodness, give thanks for all Your benefits, and serve You in willing obedience throughout all our days; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Fraternally in Christ,

President Lee Hagan
