Living Water

Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,  but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:13-14

While our Lord provided manna, quail, and water from the rock to the Israelites during their years of wandering in the wilderness, He invites us to receive even more than just daily bread.  Through Isaiah the prophet, He invites everyone who is thirsty to come to the waters and drink.  To the Samaritan woman, Jesus speaks about those who drink the water He gives that it will become a spring of living water, welling up to eternal life.  In Jerusalem at the Feast, Jesus cries out that anyone who is thirsty should come to Him to drink for whoever believes in Him, from His heart will flow rivers of living water.

The thrust of these accounts is to look to God for all that we need to support this body and life.  From the daily sustenance of food and drink to the living water that lasts even unto eternal life.  Our Lord promises to provide what we need each day, but even what we need eternally.  This is faith in God – looking to Him as the Highest Good and the Giver of all good gifts.

Through Christ Jesus, we are all able to drink this living water.  For our Lord drank deeply the bitter cup of suffering that we deserved on account of our sins so that we might draw water from the well of salvation that flows from Him.  The world offers us so many cups that promise to be sweet, but taste so bitter.  May we turn away in repentance and faith to lift up the cup of salvation, call on the name of the Lord and drink the living water that is found in Christ alone.

Prayer – Lord Jesus Christ, You drank for us the bitter cup of suffering so that we might freely drink the living water of forgiveness, life, and salvation that You freely to give to us through faith.  Turn us away from all temptations that would lead us astray so that we might receive Your good gifts with thanksgiving; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.
