Jim Ebers

Jimmy Lee “Jim” Ebers, 69, of Concordia, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2023, at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, Missouri.
Born August 14, 1953, in Chester, Illinois, he was the son of Harold Ebers and Virginia Mayer Ebers. He grew up in Steeleville, Illinois where he attended St. Mark’s Lutheran School and graduated from Steeleville High School in 1971. He attended St. Paul’s College in Concordia and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska in December of 1979. He attained a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology in 2005 from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg. After meeting at St. Paul’s College, he married Cynthia Kay Roerig, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sparta, Wisconsin on November 18, 1978.
Jim taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grade at Zion Lutheran School in Chebanse, Illinois from December 1979 to May of 1986 where he also coached the boys and girls basketball, girls volleyball, and track teams. He also led the church’s youth group and was in charge of the Vacation Bible School program.
After moving to Concordia in 1986, he taught 7th grade and junior high math until his retirement in 2019. Along with his teaching duties, he coached various boys and girls basketball teams, the school’s soccer team, and helped during the track season. During his last years of teaching, he assisted with the school’s band program.
Jim was an avid fisherman, enjoyed attracting purple martins, and playing baseball. He played on a senior men’s team competing in the Kansas City area and traveled to Phoenix, Arizona to play in the Men’s Senior World Series. He was also well-known by all who knew him for his jokes. In 2015, his science fiction novel, Twin Sons of Zimbar, was published.
Jim is survived by his wife, Cindy, of the home; mother-in-law, Marilyn Roerig of Sparta, Wisconsin; two sisters-in-law, Cindy Ebers of Chester, Illinois and Donna Ebers of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; two brothers-in law, Randy Roerig (Ginny) of Marathon, Wisconsin and Brad Roerig (Julie) of Chandler, Arizona; nephews, Brian Ebers, of St. Louis, Joshua Ebers of North Carolina, Adam Ebers of Belleville, Illinois, Eric Ebers of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; a niece, Sara Moore of Placitas, New Mexico; and 10 great-nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Larry Ebers and Rick Ebers.
Visitation was April 3, 2023, at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home in Concordia. Funeral services were held April 4, 2023, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Concordia, with Pastor Michael Pottschmidt and Pastor Andrew Lehenbauer officiating. Memorials are suggested to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
