Pastoral response and prayer

Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Missouri District,

It is my duty to inform you about an issue that concerns our Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.

LCMS Central Illinois District (CID) President Rev. Michael Mohr was arrested by federal law enforcement on allegations of production of child pornography. The Department of Justice has issued a press release detailing the disturbing charge.

The LCMS and the CID have pledged their full cooperation with the investigation. The CID First Vice-President Michael Burdick has now assumed responsibilities of the district president. The President of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison, has also posted this statement on the LCMS website.

If you or a loved one have something to report on this matter, please contact the FBI St. Louis Office at 314-589-2500. The LCMS Central Illinois District has also established a resource to receive reports from any individual who may have experienced harm by Michael Mohr. You may call 877-276-1740 or email districtassistance@cidlcms.org. These are being monitored by Ms. Rebekah Wendling, a mental health professional.

Any instance of sexual violence or exploitation by a servant of the church against others — especially children — is unfathomable. Christ’s church is supposed to be place of safety and comfort for God’s people. If you suspect sexual abuse perpetrated against children or others, please let authorities know. If you have suffered such experiences in the past, please speak with your pastor, a counselor or another brother or sister in Christ for help.

We pray…
For all victims of sexual exploitation and violence
For law enforcement investigators and justice personnel
For our sister congregations of the Central Illinois District
For the staff and volunteers of the Central Illinois District
For God’s holy angels to protect all from harm and danger
For all whose faith is shaken, that God would strengthen us
For the peace that comes through Jesus Christ, our Lord
“Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.”

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Craig D. Otto
Interim President of the LCMS Missouri District
